Square: Native support for 64-bit Flash

On 15 September, in a blog Adobe announced the availability of Flash Player Square: A preliminary version of Flash Player, which offers as most interesting feature native support for 64-bit architectures.

can find more information about their features, and links to download the Adobe website.

Since the installation instructions for Linux are rather terse, published the following instructions for those wishing to install the player on computers with Ubuntu.

Flash Player Installation "Square" in Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64

If we look at the system files on your Ubuntu looking for the location of the flash player, you will see references to it in multiple sites. Also we note that the installation was done with the system alternatives, which we will benefit by installing the version of "square" without removing the stable we have alcualmente. This is precisely the objective of the system alternatives: allowing coexist alternatives that offer the same service.

In the file system, we can observe the following entries relating to Flash Player (We're talking about a distribution system with a 64-bit ):

First, the library containing 32-bit version of the player :
/ usr / lib / flashplugin-installer / libflashplayer.so

In addition, an entry to run the player via a wrapper (wrapper) that allows the execution 32-bit code in 64-bit environments:
/ var / lib / flashplugin-installer / npwrapper.libflashplayer.so

Finally, tickets for various applications that may require the flash player:
/ usr / lib / iceape / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so
/ usr / lib / iceweasel / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so
/ usr / lib / firefox / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so
/ usr / lib / midbrowser / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so
/ usr / lib / mozilla / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so
/ usr / lib / xulrunner-addons / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so
/ usr / lib / xulrunner / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so

Looking at these entries, we see that there are more than symbolic links to the directory that stores the configuration utility alternatives:

/ etc / alternatives / iceape-flashplugin
/ etc / alternatives / iceweasel-flashplugin
/ etc / alternatives / firefox-flashplugin
/ etc / alternatives / midbrowser-flashplugin
/ etc / alternatives / mozilla-flashplugin
/ etc / alternatives / xulrunner-addons-flashplugin
/ etc / alternatives / xulrunner-flashplugin
turn

All these entries are symbolic links to a single point: The library set to be executed through the wrapper we mentioned above:

/ var / lib / flashplugin-installer / npwrapper.libflashplayer.so

What we do is to respect all this setup and add as a new alternative version square. This avoids the need to uninstall the version you currently have. Also allow that if problems occur or become unstable, we can easily go back and continue watching the system and update the stable version.

Installation:

We go to the page listed above and download the 64-bit version for Linux :

create an installation directory (With a name and location consistent with the stable version) to make it in this new version:

sudo mkdir / usr / lib / flashplugin-square
cd / usr / lib / flashplugin-square
sudo tar-xzf ~ /
Descargas/flashplayer_square_p1_64bit_linux_091510.tar.gz

Then install alternatives for those programs we want to use the new player. comment that Firefox (at least version 3.6.x) does not use the input firefox, mozilla but entry. That is, if you only want to do the tests in Firefox, simply run the following command:

 sudo update-alternatives - Install / usr / lib / mozilla / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so mozilla-flashplugin / usr / lib / flashplugin-square / libflashplayer.so 60

If we restart the browser, you will see that we have a 64-bit version (in particular, is version 10.2.161.22), which runs without any wrapper.

Anytime we can switch between the two versions with the following command:
 sudo update-alternatives - config mozilla-flashplugin

And finally, if we perform the same operation with any other product that can make use flash player, just repeat these operations for the product in question:

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/iceape/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so iceape-flashplugin /usr/lib/flashplugin-square/libflashplayer.so 60
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so iceweasel-flashplugin /usr/lib/flashplugin-square/libflashplayer.so 60
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so firefox-flashplugin /usr/lib/flashplugin-square/libflashplayer.so 60
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/midbrowser/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so midbrowser-flashplugin /usr/lib/flashplugin-square/libflashplayer.so 60
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so xulrunner-addons-flashplugin / usr / lib / flashplugin-square / 60
libflashplayer.so sudo update-alternatives - install / usr / lib / xulrunner / plugins / flashplugin-alternative.so-flashplugin xulrunner / usr/lib/flashplugin- square / libflashplayer.so 60

After doing a few tests results are excellent: The player is extremely stable and everything seems to work properly.

For those who want to try it, leave a link to an interesting site that can serve as a test (as indicated FPS rate and RAM used).
